Steve Encourages You and the Cartoonist

by Steve Cumberdale

November 13th 2023

(see an introduction to the blog further down the page.)

Hey. Steve here. I don’t know what’s up with my buddy, Nate, the cartoonist. He’s kind of struggling lately.

He finally has some friends who are being pretty cool to him. I hope that he doesn’t go off the deep end and ruin that.

Me and him have had our struggles.

We have a lot in common.

Seems like he is in a good place.

Just in case you didn’t know, Nate is the cartoonist who created me. We hate it when people assume that everyone already knows what they are talking about.

Yeah, but Nate just needs to chill.

Things are going good for him and for me.

Life is a journey and not a destination. I just want him to see how that he’s safe now.

His soul is safe.

He has a good heart.

It’s been a long time since he was in the psych ward.

There are certain things he doesn’t talk about.

I think he feels safer talking through me.

We’re buddies.

I guess I am the closest thing he will ever have to a kid.

A long time ago, he thought he might have kids, but that didn’t work out.

If you were expecting the blog to be funny, I hope you’re not disappointed.

Today, we want to be encouraging.

Whatever you’re going through out there, just hang in there.

Just like the name of the comic strip, “Adventures In Sane.” Life is an insane adventure a lot fo the time.

As long as you’re trying to do the right thing and not messing people over, you’re gonna be okay.

Hurt people hurt people, but it takes a person with a good heart to stop the hurt.

I think Nate should do more videos for YouTube. We used to do radio shows and a podcast. We had a lot of fun with those.

I don’t know if Nate could ever make a living at this.

He’s like me. We’re mentally ill and disabled because of it.

But we’re capable of a lot.

It just takes a nudge for us to get in gear and get going.

Whoever you are out there, just know this: you’re capable of more than you think.

You can overcome more obstacles than it seems like you can. The stuff that gets in your way, well sometimes it’s just there to strengthen you. Sometimes it’s there to help you understand that you need to be working on something else.

Nate tried to do a lot of things.

He gave up on a lot of them.

But he is hanging in there with a lot of them too.

He is still sober and I am proud of him for that.

He is trying to be a better friend and that is pretty cool too.

Sure, he’s getting older and he gets bummed out about that.

I will always be 27, even if 27-year-olds don’t always understand me.

A lot of people don’t understand me.

That’s okay.

Just know that you are not alone, wherever you are. Whatever you got going on, there are people praying for you. People care about you. They really do. People think about you more often than you realize. Maybe sometimes they wish you would change. I just hope we can all learn and grow.

I have to stay positive or else I will wind up hiding from the world.

That’s not good.

We don’t want that.

Nate, a lot of people are proud of you. Keep doing right. You’ve made it pretty far. You’re not done yet.

I was always there and I will always be there.

Okay. That’s all for now.

Read the Actual Thoughts of a Real-Life Comic Strip Character

Steve's Headshot for Steve's blog. Steve is a comic strip character with blonde hair who always wears the same orange tee shirt with a blue rectangle on it.

Welcome to the blogging home of Stephen J. Cumberdale. As a want-to-be Spiritual leader and comedian, Steve’s take on life comes from a very different perspective. Steve, like his creator, Nathan Hyatt, was inspired to start a religious movement. Both of them figured out that that was not really going to work very well for various reasons.

But Steve has an advantage. He is a comic strip character. He is able to have as many psychotic breaks as he wants and no one really gets hurt. At least not in real life.

Now, Nathan, the creator (at least Steve’s creator) knows that mental health can be a very serious subject. But taking a break and laughing at life and finding joy in everyday things is certainly not a big, fat no-no.

It’s part of what makes life worth living.

We hope you will enjoy Steve’s take on life, spirituality, religion, politics, humor and stuff ranging from pizza toppings to video games. (Don’t try to talk Steve into playing video games. He already plays too many.)

Enough of talking about Steve in the third person. Without any more unnecessary rambling, here, in his own words, is Steve’s first blog post.

Hello, World

Steve’s First Blog Post

by Steve J. Cumberdale

Hey. What’s happening? Steve here. I don’t want to tell you the date today because I want everything to seem timeless. I live in Winter Key Bay, Florida in a house with my roommates, Billy Bob, Candy and Lester. My girlfriend doesn’t live with us because my Pastor doesn’t think it’s a good idea. Oh, yeah. Don’t want to forget to mention Pastor Brown. He’s a pretty cool dude. He really gets how to do the right thing.

Got to shout out my girlfriend, Hannah. She has been really cool to me ever since I met her in the psych ward. We kind of fell in love there. Not the best place to start a relationship according to some people, but hey, it happened.

My voices are talking to me. They want me to introduce them.

There’s Little Devil Nonsense and Professor Conscience.

There’s also the Phunetunians, who are aliens from another planet and there’s the Shining Vegan Meatball, who thinks it’s up to him to save the world from me and me from the world.

But I want to talk about Conscience And Nonsense. They have been there for me for years. Other people don’t see them, but that’s okay. They have always kept me company no matter what. I can trust them to stay cool and be my friends even when friends in real life are kind of weird and mean.

Little Devil Nonsense just wants to hang out and eat snacks and watch movies. Sometimes he wants to watch really good movies.

Professor Conscience used to try to get me to do the right thing all the time. But I think that he has kind of softened up a bit over time.

It’s been a long time since I have been in the psych ward. I want to say, maybe a year and a half? That’s when I met Hannah. She’s pretty awesome. She gets impatient with me a lot, but I guess that’s a chicks job. She’s got to keep her man in line.

People were always telling Nate that he needed to write more. I get my ideas from him, so if he gets writer’s block, I get writer’s block. We’ll try to keep up with putting fresh material here on a regular basis.

We want to talk about spiritual stuff a lot and cool things like that here.

If you have any questions, shoot us a message at Conscience@ConsAndNonsMag.com

That’s hooked up with the magazine Nate runs. Professor Conscience will try to answer your question. He might get overwhelmed though.

Yeah, by the way. You should visit Conscience And Nonsense Magazine here at this web address, ConsAndNonsMag.com

That’s all for now. TTYL.
